330 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I ntrigued by plant pathology from an early age, Dr. Don C. Hildebrand was drawn to plant pathologists who worked with bacteria. First studying at North Idaho College in 1949, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Washington State University in 1953 and PhD from the University of California Berkeley in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he began serving as a plant pathologist for UC Berkeley until his retirement from the field in 1990. During his career, Dr. Hildebrand developed 3D models that showed bacterial relationships. Most impressively, he found a cure for a particular type of cancer found in plants, which he cites as a career highlight. He has also discovered four different types of bacteria that were previously undiscovered. Furthermore, he has contributed myriad research articles to esteemed journals and was an associate editor of the Annual Review of Phytopathology and the Plant Disease Reporter. A former lieutenant (junior grade) of the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Hildebrand also served as an air intelligence officer from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1956. To remain abreast of developments in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Phytopathological Society, the Society for General Microbiology, the American Society for Microbiology and the International Committee of Systematic Bacteriology, where he sat on the subcommittee on pseudomonas and related organisms. As a testament to his success and longevity in the field, Dr. Hildebrand received a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health in 1967. Likewise, he was selected for inclusion in the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the West in 1987. He defines success as simply attaining happiness in one’s own personal and professional lives. The proud father of three children, Dr. Hildebrand enjoys running half marathons in his spare time. DON C.
