333 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine to 1978. Since 1978, he has been a prominent physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington, where he was inducted into Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa, and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology. Authoring such works as “Spallation as a Dominant Source of Pusher-Fuel and Hot-Spot Mix in Inertial Confinement Fusion Capsules” in 2016 and “VISTA – A Vehicle for Interplanetary Space Transport Application Powered by Inertial Confinement Fusion” in 2003, Dr. Orth has conducted a plethora of research on high-altitude cosmic-ray spectrometry, Monte Carlo nuclear electromagnetic cascade calculations and real- time corrected telescope images. He helped to design the VISTA fusion-powered spacecraft to Mars, as well as inertial confinement fusion chambers, targets and lasers. Notably, he aided in the development of an inertial energy power plant design. Among the notable achievements of his career, Dr. Orth cites a highlight to be understanding that spallation of shocked target materials inhibited the National Ignition Facility from achieving fusion ignition. He became involved in his profession after watching lighting strike the tip of a flagpole as a young child, thus propelling his interest in the sciences. As a testament to his success, Dr. Orth has accrued several accolades and honors. He has been featured in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and the 71st edition of Who’s Who in America. Likewise, he earned the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and was recognized by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2016. Married with two sons, Dr. Orth also has two grandchildren. He enjoys playing the piano in his spare time. D r. Charles D.
