353 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine College from 1977 to 1989. In her time spent at the college, she worked closely with faculty to ensure the survival of the college programs through donations and foundations. Founding the South African divestment movement, she was applauded by Nobel Prize winner and past state president of Africa, Frederik Willem de Klerk. Named one of Chicago’s 100 Most Influential Women by Crain’s Chicago Business in 2004, Dr. Simmons is also renowned for her role as president of the MacArthur Foundation from 1989 to 1999, a foundation that focused intently on climate issues. Other vocational positions to her credit have included serving as a faculty member at Tufts University and Princeton University, dean at Jackson College and Dean of Students at Princeton University, where she was the first woman senior officer and taught African history. Drawing upon a BA with honors from the former Radcliffe College at Harvard University, Dr. Simmons subsequently earned a PhD from the University of Oxford in 1969. She has received 10 honorary doctorates from such institutions as Lake Forest College, Amherst College, Franklin PierceUniversity, theUniversity of Massachusetts, Alverno College, Marlboro College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, American University and Tufts University. Dr. Simmons has been a frequent contributor to professional journals of articles on education and public policy. She authored the book “Modern Mauritius” in 1982 and “Exploitation from 9 to 5: Twentieth Century Fund Task Force on Working Women” in 1975. More recently, Dr. Simmons served as vice chair and senior executive for Chicago Metropolis 2020 for adecade. She is currentlybasedat TheChicago Community Trust and serves on the boards of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Ceres, Synergos and the Field Museum of Natural History. D r. Adele Smith Simmons was initially inspired to enter the field of civic service by her father Hermon Dunlap Smith, who was heavily involved in civic outreach programs and was a pioneering business executive.
