335 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Alan Ernest Exel Rogers developed an interest in the sciences because of his father’s work, which involved radio technology. As a former World War II pilot, Dr. Rogers’ father utilized his extensive knowledge of radio technology and built his own satellite tracking station, where he was able to record data from early satellites. Deriving inspiration from his father’s accomplishments, Dr. Rogers attended the University of Rhodesia (now known as the University of Zimbabwe), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1962. From there, he immigrated to the United States and obtained a Master of Science and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1964 and 1967, respectively. At the inception of his career in 1967, Dr. Rogers served the MIT Haystack Observatory as a member of the research staff. Remaining with the observatory for the duration of his career, he was soon promoted to associate director in 1993. Since 2006, he has been a research affiliate with the observatory. During his tenure, he also served as a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe for one year. Among his notable accomplishments, Dr. Rogers is most renowned for the development of a long baseline interferometry for astronomy and geodesy. Fortunate to have experienced wonderful achievements, he is most proud of his development of deuterium detection and measurement of the universe theories. Further, during his academic studies he was assigned to build a radio telescope to see the hydrogen in the universe. Based on Dr. Rogers’ design, the funder of the project had over 500 models built and sold to universities across the country. As a testament to his success, Dr. Rogers was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. He also received the John Howard Dellinger Medal in 2008 and the Grote Reber Medal in 2010. Impressively, he was featured in the first edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering in 1992. Dr. Rogers has been married to his wife Louise Marilyn Holland since February 24, 1968 and has two children, Heather and David.
