355 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A t the end of World War II, interest in nuclear energy was very great. Dr. Chapman was drawn to this field and received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and PhD in nuclear physics from Rice University in 1954, 1955 and 1957, respectively. In 1959, he switched to the development of semiconductor devices when he moved to Texas Instruments, Incorporated in Dallas, Texas. At Texas Instruments, Dr. Chapman worked as a member of the technical staff and as branch manager until he became a TI Fellow in 1987 as a result of his work on detectors for night vision. His next assignment was on the development of silicon integrated circuits, and he became a TI Senior Fellow in 1994. Due to health problems, he retired in 1998, but in 2000 came back to Texas Instruments working part time until 2007. Since 2008, he has been a research scientist at the University of Texas at Dallas. As a Boy Scout, Dr. Chapman attended the 1946 International Boy Scout Jamboree in Moisson, France. Later, he became an Eagle Scout. Dr. Chapman is a Presbyterian and has served as an elder in his church for several terms. In his technical field, Dr. Chapman served the Symposium on Very Large Scale Integration as a committee member, Co-Chairman, and Chairman. Dr. Chapman is the author of 154 technical papers, 42 U.S. patents, and eight foreign patents. In 1987, he was honored with the IEEE Jack A. Morton Award. He was featured in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. During his undergraduate years at Rice University, Dr. Chapman was a captain of the 1953 Rice football team that defeated Alabama in the January 1954 Cotton Bowl Game. He was the first round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, but instead went to graduate school. He is a Trustee Advisor to the Rice Board of Governors, and in 2017, was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Rice University. To watch this video, please click here.
