281 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S upportedbyyearsof experienceandanexceptional education, Susan Owens Hamilton has found success as a lawyer and transportation executive. After earning a BA from Auburn University, she obtained a JD from Samford University. She was admitted to practice law in Florida and Alabama, beginning her career as a claim agent with the Seaboard SystemRailroad in 1977. Ms. Hamilton flourished in several positions with the railroad system, including as an attorney, claim attorney, assistant general solicitor and general manager of freight claim services. After the company merged with Chessie System Inc. to form CSX Transportation, Ms. Hamilton accepted the position of assistant vice president of freight damage prevention and claims from 1986 to 1987. Holding the posts of vice president, general counsel and general manager with CSX between 1987 and 2000, she excelled as chief diversity officer of CSX until 2012. She has since worked as a part-time legal counsel with Springboard Consulting, as well as on the advisory council for the Cumberland School of Law and an emeritus advisory council member for the College of Business at Auburn University. Ms. Hamilton has maintained involvement with the American Bar Association, the Jacksonville Bar Association and the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, for which she was appointed co-chair for the diversity task force. The past president of the Jacksonville chapter of Business and Professional Women’s Foundation, she has held several leadership positions with the Uptown Civitan Club, the Gator Bowl, the United Way of Northeast Florida, Pine Castle, Go Red for Women Jacksonville, the Girl Scouts of the USA and the St. Paul United Methodist Church. Ms. Hamilton received a Corporate Leader Award from HandsOn Jacksonville and Inaugural Wolf Award from the Women’s Leadership Forum. She was recognized as Outstanding Young Career Woman by Florida Business and Professional Women, among Women of Power by the National Council of Jewish Women, as Corporate Leader of the Year by Women in Business, and Member of the Year by the Uptown Civitan Club. Featured on the Women’s History Month Poster by the Mayor of Jacksonville, she was honored by the Jacksonville Business Journal as a Woman of Influence.
