101 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION as chairman of social studies from 1987 until his retirement in 2000. Likewise, he served the school district as head coach of tennis and curriculum coordinator of social studies for grades K-12. Subsequent to his academic retirement, he was a tournament director for the Dave Mason Tennis Tournament for the following 15 years. Initially pressured to pursue law, Mr. Lilien earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago and JD from Columbia University. Discovering that his skills were better suited for educational purposes, he returned to college and obtained a Master of Arts in teaching from the prestigious Harvard University. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Mr. Lilien has authored numerous books, including “Water is Rising in the Classroom: True Teacher Terror Dreams” in 2004, “Competition Experiment” in 1986, “The History of Greece and Rome” in 1979 and “German History, 1815-1945” in 1972. An avid fencing and tennis enthusiast, Mr. Lilien served Brown University as head coach of fencing for six years and Harvard University as a fencing coach for one year, and has been the director of the Concord Academy Fencing Camp since 1975. Notably, he was the commissioner of the Northeast Intercollegiate Fencing Conference in Boxboro, Massachusetts, in 1993. A founder and president of the Four School Consortium, he also served as president of Concord-Carlisle Teachers for 22 years. As a testament to his success in the field, Mr. Lilien has accrued numerous accolades and grants. He is most proud of being inducted into the Concord-Carlisle Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. Married to his wife Nancy Goddard Pierce since 1985, Mr. Lilien was born in Maplewood, New Jersey, and currently resides in Boxboro. In his spare time, he plays tennis and collects World War I posters, swords, beer steins and autographs. S erving Concord-Carlisle Regional School District for 35 years, Elliot Lilien is a dedicated secondary school educator and fencing and tennis coach. At the inception of his career in 1965, he served Concord-Carlisle High School as a teacher and head coach of fencing, holding the latter position for 20 years.
