102 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION W hen he was 18 years old, Dr. Howard Littman desired to enter the U.S. Navy, which sent him to the boot camp of the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. Spending one semester before he enlisted in the Navy, he returned to Cornell after the atomic bomb was dropped and earned a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree supported by the G.I. Bill. He then attended Yale University, where he earned a PhD in 1956. At the inception of his career in 1955, Dr. Littman served as an assistant to associate professor at Syracuse University until his departure in 1965. During his tenure at Syracuse, he spent time at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory between 1957 and 1959. Beginning in 1965, Dr. Littman joined the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he was promoted to the rank of full professor of chemical engineering in 1967. Serving in that capacity for 34 years, he was also chairman of the faculty council between 1975 and 1976. He attained professor emeritus status in 2007 after retiring in 2001. During his career, Dr. Littman was a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Belgrade in Serbia and a visiting professor at Chonnam National University in South Korea and Imperial College London in England. A patentee in the field, he has also contributed many articles to professional journals. To remain abreast of developments in the field, he has maintained affiliation with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where he is also a fellow, and the American Chemical Society. As a testament to his success, Dr. Littman received a Distinguished Faculty Award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1988. Notably, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers held an honorary session to celebrate his career accomplishments at their annual meeting in San Francisco in November 2013. However, the highlight of his career was helping his wife start a local library in Onondaga Hill near Syracuse, as well as one of the founders of a delivery service for library research material in the Albany area of New York.
