103 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Harvey Ethan Mayer chose to be an educator of languages in light of his inherent connection to language. In 1959, he graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Slavic languages and literature. He received his Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1960 and then acquired his PhD from Harvard in 1966. After receiving hismaster’s degree, Dr. Mayer became an assistant professor at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. He taught at Purdue for five years until he received an offer to be a professor at California State University (CSU), Fullerton. He taught at CSU until 1980. Dr. Mayer then became a training instructor at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center inMonterey, California, until his retirement in 1994. During his career, Dr. Mayer was also a First Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1979 to 1985. Dr. Mayer was born in New York City in 1936 to a mother of Russian descent; she is the reason he took a particular interest in Slavic languages. Slavic languages come from countries of Eastern Europe, as well as the Balkan Peninsula and Baltic region. The languages Dr. Mayer first began learning included Spanish and German, but he then quickly moved on to learn various Slavic languages such as Polish and Croatian. The highlight of Dr. Mayer’s career was dismissing the Balto-Slavic connection, which is very difficult to do because the languages looked more similar than they really were. Dr. Mayer is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies, a private, nonprofit federation of 71 national scholarly organizations that is the preeminent representative of American scholarships in the humanities and related social sciences. Dr. Mayer is also a contributor of articles to professional journals. The mentors who motivated and inspired him to continue within his desired area of study were Professors Roman Jakobsos and Horace G. Lunt.
