104 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B eginning her career as an elementary and secondary school teacher, Dr. Jane A. McDonald is a distinguished figure in the education industry. Accruing over 40 years of experience, she retired in 2008 after serving George Mason University as an associate professor of educational leadership for nine years. Prior to this appointment, she served in the same role at George Washington University for a decade between 1989 and 1999. A former assistant superintendent of schools at Niskayuna Public Schools in Schenectady, New York, she was also an executive fellow of the National Academy of School Executives with the American Association of School Administrators. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Education from the University of Florida, and a Master of Education and EdD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. McDonald has been a member of the performance standard setting committee for the Virginia Reading Assessment of the Virginia Department of Instruction since 2005. During her tenure, she contributed myriad articles to professional publications, authoring the International Journal of Educational Reform between 1991 and 1997. Likewise, she has been a chapter advisor of Phi Delta Kappa International since 2000. A past president of Virginia Professors of Educational Leadership from 2004 to 2006 and former area chair of the American Heart Association in Reston, Virginia, Dr. McDonald cites the highlights of her career are the opportunities she has taken to meet unique individuals, learn and cultivate from new experiences, and teach others who are willing to learn. She has traveled extensively across the United States and Europe. In her spare time, she also enjoys dancing, writing and sketching. As a testament to her success, Dr. McDonald has garnered numerous accolades. A fellow of the University Center for Excellence in Municipal Management, she was nominated among the 100 Top Education Leaders in the United States by the National School Boards Association. An expert fencer, she also was recognized for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Fencing by the Washington Metropolitan Fencing Association and won the Presidential Fitness Award for Fencing from the White House.
