106 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. ImogeneMathisonMixson knew froma young age that shewanted to be an educator. Graduating valedictorian of her sixth grade, ninth grade and twelfth grade classes, she attended Troy State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1959. While serving as an English teacher at Dothan High School, she received a Master of Science from Auburn University in 1963. From there, she began serving Enterprise State Community College as an English instructor from 1966 to 1982, during which time she earned a PhD from Florida State University in 1972. She was also chair of the Department of English for 14 years. Beginning in 1982, Dr. Mixson served Wallace State Community College as an English instructor, English department chair and assistant academic dean for one year before being named academic dean in 1983. Serving in that role for 13 years, she subsequently retired in 1996. During this time, she was the interim president of the college in 1991. Immediately before and after her retirement, she was the 1996-1997 interim president of Alabama Aviation College. Dr. Mixson is proudest of receiving three awards in 2016 from her alma maters: theOutstandingAlumnusAward fromAuburnUniversity, theAlumnus of the Year Award fromTroy University and the Distinguished Educator Award from Florida State University. Noting that the awards represented those who have helped her achieve success throughout her career, she has been grateful for the opportunity to educate students, to contribute to the total educational experience and to be part of the large education community that makes the world better in so many remarkable ways. Alongside these prominent accolades, Dr. Mixson has also received a University Woman Graduate Award from Auburn University in 1992 and the Administrator of the Year Award and Distinguished Leadership Award from the Alabama Community College System in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Earlier in her career, she earned three Teacher of the Year Awards from Enterprise State Community College in 1973, 1977 and 1980.
