111 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine C armelita Beal Parrish became interested in education due to the influence of her Latin teacher, who was professional and well-ordered in the classroom. Attending Middle Georgia College, Ms. Parrish received an Associate of Arts in 1979 before earning a Bachelor of Education from Georgia Southern University in 1981. Thereafter, she received a Master of Education from Valdosta State University in 1988 and a Master of Arts from the University of Georgia in 1993. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, Ms. Parrish began her career as a secondary school teacher of English, Spanish and graphic arts for the Ware County Board of Education in Waycross, Georgia, for the following decade. From there, she served as an English and Spanish teacher at the Telfair County Board of Education in McRae, Georgia, for one year before serving in the same role for Pickens County High School until her retirement from secondary school education in 1998. In retirement, she continued to teach as an adjunct instructor of Spanish at Macon State College from 1999 to 2006. Also known for her poetry skills, Ms. Parrish published her poems “Te Quiero,” “Dreams” and “Shawn.” She was listed in the International Dictionary of Biographies in Oxford, England, as well as Who’s Who Among American Teachers, Who’s Who in the South and Who’s Who Among Women. Likewise, she maintains affiliation with the National Education Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the Georgia Association of Educators, where she served on the political action committee and as a local association president. Further, she sat on the evaluation committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Parrish received the Star Teacher Award from the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce in 1987. However, she cites the highlight of her career to be seeing the faces of her students when they witnessed the Eiffel Tower for the first time. She also enjoyed traveling overseas with her students and teaching them the culture and language of European countries with a hands-on approach.
