115 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nspired in his English high school by foreign languages, Dr. Dennis Dudley Porter won a place at Cambridge University, where he studied French and German for three years. Upon graduation, he spent one year in Germany, followed by another in France, where he met his French wife, and went on to earn a Master of Arts as well as a bachelor’s degree. After spending one year teaching at King’s College School inWimbledon, he immigrated to the United States, where he earned a PhD at the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in 1966. Soon thereafter, Dr. Porter began his tenure at UC Berkeley as an assistant professor in those tumultuous years. Five years later in 1971, he accepted an appointment at theUniversity ofMassachusetts Amherst, where he taught French literature and culture, including theater, film and theory as well as the novel. From 1971 until his retirement in 1991, he also served as director of Center for Studies in Contemporary Culture. He published three books: “Pursuit of Crime” (Yale U.P.), “Haunted Journeys” (Princeton U.P.) and “Rousseau’s Legacy” (Oxford U.P.). He also translated Jacques Alain Miller’s “Ethics of Psychoanalysis,” published 30 articles and delivered 40 papers. Dr. Porter took retirement chiefly to pursue the playwriting he had begun, and over the years since, he has become a prolific playwright. As a testament to his success, he has been rewarded with a number of awards including the John Gassner: Rainbow with Strings, the Julie Harris: Cradle to Grave and Adele’s Way: Broadway Bound International Theater Festival. He has also written or translated numerous works of varying lengths and genres that have been performed from Boston to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and elsewhere. Highlighted in the 72 nd edition of Who’sWho in America in 2019, Dr. Porter has also been recognized in the 46 th through 50 th editions of Who’s Who in America beginning in 1990.
