91 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D esiring to delve into medical research from an early age, Dr. Arthur Ainsworth Hagen was encouraged by his family to pursue an excellent education. Earning a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota in 1957, he received a PhD from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1961. From there, he relocated to the University of Utah, serving as a National Institutes of Health trainee in steroid biochemistry for two years. He subsequently traveled overseas to the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, completing a fellowship through the Swedish Medical Research Council for an additional one and one-half years. After completing his fellowship in 1965, Dr. Hagen served the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences as an assistant professor for four years. Climbing the ranks to associate professor in 1969, he fulfilled the role until 1980 when he became a full professor. After three years, he departed from the university and traveled to South Dakota, attaining the role of professor and chairman of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of South Dakota. Beginning his tenure in 1983, he served until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Hagen was a visiting professor at myriad collegiate institutions, such as the South Dakota State University, the University of North Dakota, Mount Marty College, the Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Georgetown, Guyana, the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Texas College of OsteopathicMedicine. Serving on a number of committees throughout his vocation, he has garnered many accolades from the College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, as well as from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Proud of being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, he was further selected as the senior class sponsor of numerous classes at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, where he also had funding for his research. Happily married to the late Laurin Kirley for 57 years, Dr. Hagen has four children and 11 grandchildren.
