30 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D oris Anne Holman’s passion is watercolor art. She received a BS from Goucher College, MA in reading from Loyola College and completed postgraduate coursework in art at the University of Maine. Through the years, Ms. Holman has been an elementary school teacher, reading specialist and art teacher at Monmouth Schools in Maine, Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland, and elementary schools in Virginia. She has taught adult watercolor workshops in Santa Fe, Bermuda and Maine. Ms. Holman retired from teaching in 1997, and since then, she has written and illustrated 12 children’s books and one how-to watercolor book for adults titled “Watercolor Sparkles.” The title of her first book, “Come with Me to the Sea,” came to her at night and she immediately jotted the words down. She realized this was God’s way of telling her to write a book. Her other books include “Goldie the Green Sea Turtle,” “Dusty the Gopher Tortoise,” “The Old Fisherman and The Pelican,” and more. Ms. Holman’s other artistic works have been featured in galleries across Maine. Most recently, she was the recipient of the Presenter Award from the University of South Florida, the winner of the contest selection for 16 paintings on commission from the state of Maine, and the recipient of the Percent for Art Award from the Maine Arts Commission. Her work is currently in the Cynthia Pettengill Gallery. Ms. Holman has instructed adult watercolor workshops in Maine, New Mexico and New Hampshire. She has also taught watercolor at the University of Maine. Ms. Holman calls the highlight of her career to have been the opportunity to lead art workshops in Bermuda. Vincent Hartgen of UMO invited her to show in his traveling art exhibit Museums by Mail in the 1970s, and her art and books are still in their shows. She is a member of the Maine Arts Commission and has volunteered with Story Walk for Literacy, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Odyssey at Youth Center. Her son Robert B. Charles published a book, “Eagles and Evergreens,” about growing up in Maine, and one chapter is about Ms. Holman and features her artwork.
