171 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine P hysics intrigued Dr. ShinHwa Li from a young age, and his astounding test scores gave him the confidence to consider working in the field on a professional level. Dr. Li received a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from National Central University in his native Taiwan in 1980. Directly after, he became a liaison officer in the Taiwanese Marines for the Republic of China until 1982, and then spent one year working as a quality control engineer for Ko-Shen Enterprises Ltd. in Taipei. One year later, Dr. Li immigrated to the United States and received a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Southwest Louisiana in 1985. In 1988, he achieved a Master of Engineering in materials science from the University of Utah, from whom he also received a PhD in materials science in 1990. Although Dr. Li began his studies with chemical engineering, he switched to semiconductor materials research, where he truly began to thrive. Until 1994, Dr. Li held research assistant positions at the University of Southwest Louisiana and the University of Utah and research fellow at the University of Michigan. His first engineering job in the U.S. was with STMicroelectronics, where he was a process engineer from 1994 to 1998. He then spent one year at EKC Technology as an applications engineer before heading to Chandler, Arizona, to work as a process support engineer at Applied Materials. He then served as a continuous improvement manager at Novellus from 2002 to 2004 and a program and product manager at Heraeus from 2005 to 2013. Dr. Li currently works at the Kurt J. Lesker Company in Jefferson Hill, Pennsylvania, as a product manager. Dr. Li was awarded the CMP Productivity Appreciation Award from Applied Materials in 2001 and the Technical Excellence Award from STMicroelectronics in 1997. He published the world’s first industry-oriented book, “Chemical Mechanical Polishing in Silicon Processing,” in the CMP area. Dr. Li said that of all of his achievements, he is most proud to live in a country that has given him the freedom to conduct his own engineering projects, and the freedom for his children to become successes.
