He was also commanding general of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and commanding general of the U.S. Army Health Services Command in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He departed from the military in 1995 after serving as the deputy commanding general of the new Army Medical Command. He received several decoration awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Dr. Cameron is a distinguished fellow of the American College of Physician Executives and member of the Association of Military Surgeons. He received the John D. Chase Award for Physician Executive Excellence from the Department of Defense in 1994. D r. Richard “Trooper Dick” Douglas Cameron is an army medical professional who amassed 36 years of experience prior to his retirement in 2000. Most recently the executive director and senior member of Mercy Health Plans, Inc., in Fort Smith, Arkansas, from 1995 to 2000, he formerly served various branches of the U.S. Army in myriad medical positions. Upon studying zoology in his undergraduate years at the University of Iowa, he discovered his interest in medicine. He then joined the ROTC and went on to medical school, obtaining an MD in 1965. Dr. Cameron was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1964 and advanced through the grades to major general by 1989. A medical intern at the Brooke Army Medical Center, he went on to serve as a resident at Letterman General Hospital before becoming the commanding officer for the 98th Medical Detachment and division psychiatrist for the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Dr. Cameron served as a psychiatrist and division surgeon in Germany, aswell as chief of themedical team in Saudi Arabia.
