Until 1978, he was a resident in pathology at the Vanderbilt University Hospital. While at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Fody studied the impact of chemical compounds on cancer therapy, and he continued to work on those studies when he became a physician. Dr. Fody has worked at multiple hospital labs during his tenure, including the Little Rock VA Hospital in Arkansas as laboratory chief, and he was the chief pathologist at Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Western Michigan Pathology Associates at Holland Hospital. He has been a pathologist at Holland Hospital since 2013. The highlight of Dr. Fody’s career was building new pathology laboratories at three different hospitals. He made personnel changes and oversaw the building of the new labs, and he is proud that all of the labs are still serving patients. Dr. Fody is also the editor and author of “Clinical Chemistry,” published in 1984. Dr. Fody is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Association, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, American Society for Microbiology, Michigan State Medical Society and the Ottawa County Medical Society. Although he plans to retire in the next five years, Dr. Fody is extremely excited about the future advancements in pathology. He believes the biggest development in the next 20 years is the promise of molecular medicine and progresses in diagnosing tumors and genetic diseases. Dr. Fody calls his work extremely rewarding, and he thanks his three mentors – Dr. WilliamHartmann, Dr. Robert Collins and Dr. David Page – for guiding him in his career and studies. F rom a young age, Dr. Edward P. Fody had a strong interest in science, and he specifically wanted to study cancer. When it was time to attend college, there was no stopping him from entering the medical field. He first attended Duke University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1969.
