239 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T he first medical examiner for Yavapai County, Arizona, when Arizona converted from a coroner system to medical examiner system in 1975, Dr. Philip E. Keen occupied that office for seventeen years, simultaneously serving as chief of pathology for the Yavapai Regional Medical Center. After simultaneously serving as an associate in the Maricopa County Medical Examiner Office for six years, Dr. Keen was named chief medical examiner for Maricopa County in 1992. In anticipation of working as a medical examiner, he was one of eight persons awarded a national fellowship in forensic pathology, which he chose to exercise in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Oklahoma, preparing him to handle the logistics of death investigation in remote locations. Dr. Keenwas a GMscholar at the University of NewMexico (UNM), where he obtained a BS in chemistry before being a member of the second graduating class of the UNM School of Medicine. Continuing his interest in education, Dr. Keen was elected to two terms on the local school board in Prescott. He also authored a book focusing on forensic pathology, “Objection He’s Still Alive,” and currently has prepared a manuscript for a sequel, “Objection Sustained.” Dr. Keen has been active in the practice of medicine in Arizona, including serving two terms on the state medical licensing board and many years on the board of directors of the Arizona Medical Association, including president of that organization from 2004 to 2005. Dr. Keen is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, being certified in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology. He is a fellow of the College of Anatomic Pathology and the American Society of Clinical Pathology. Since his retirement as chief medical examiner, Dr. Keen continues to be active in the practice of pathology, serving as an expert witness in court cases, performing private post mortem exams, and providing part-time coverage for the Pinal County Arizona Medical Examiner. He serves as a lay minister in the Church of Christ, a function he has exercised for more than 50 years. Married to Lois Marie Anderson for more than 50 years, he is the proud father of four children: MariLynn, ShariLynn, Harvey and April. He also has 12 grandchildren. PHILIP E.
