Dr. Maddrey was elected as President of the American College of Physicians in 1992. He was also elected a master of the American College of Physicians and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He has been a frequent visiting professor at numerous universities and medical facilities across the globe. Dr. Maddrey was the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and Distinguished Educator Award from the American Gastroenterological Association. Likewise, he was elected to the Society of Scholars of the Johns Hopkins University in 1994, among other accolades. I nspired by his father, who was a surgeon, Dr. Willis Crocker Maddrey draws upon a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University and an MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Fortunate to have attended such a prestigious institution, he continued his medical training with the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he began as an intern and rose to chief resident in medicine. He subsequently completed a fellowship in liver disease at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Maddrey has accrued 50 years in his profession. A renowned educator and hepatologist, Dr. Maddrey has served as a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center since 1990. In 1993, he became executive vice president of clinical affairs. He was named the Adelyn and Edmund M. Hoffman Distinguished Chair in Medical Science in 1998 and began serving as assistant to the president in 2009.
