Martin III is a physician and medical educator who has accrued over 40 years of experience. After obtaining his medical degree, he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Louis University, followed by a fellowship in preventive medicine from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Aside from his first role as a staff physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in 1985, Dr. Martin also began serving as a staff physician at the John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis in 1989 and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in 1985. Progressing further with the university, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 1999 and Professor of Medicine in 2018. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians. During his academic studies, Dr. Martin studied exercise physiology under the mentorship of Dr. John Holloszy, who was awarded the 2000 Olympic Prize as the best exercise scientist in the world. Since that time, Dr. Martin has been a noteworthy exercise physiologist in his own right. A diplomate of the National Board of Echocardiography, the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases and the American Board of Internal Medicine, he has also conducted work as a VA Merit Review grant reviewer and ad hoc member of the heart failure study section of the National Institutes of Health. Demonstrating versatility, Dr. Martin has co-authored and reviewed articles for numerous medical journals, such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, the American Journals of Physiology and Annuals of Internal Medicine, among others. In light of his outstanding contributions to medicine and education, he was selected for inclusion in “The Guide to America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. WADE H.
