244 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine L icensed to practice medicine in 1959, Dr. Mae Frances McMillan is a recognized child psychologist and educator who accrued 55 years in the field. After obtaining anMD, with honors, fromMeharry Medical College in 1959, she went on to serve as a resident in general and child psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for two years before being hired by the college as an assistant professor of psychiatry from 1965 to 1975. From there, she was promoted to associate professor, maintaining the role for 43 years until her retirement in 2018. Punctuating these appointments, Dr. McMillan served as a resident in child psychoanalysis at the Hampstead Clinic in London and the assistant director of the Division of Child Psychiatry at the Texas Research Institute of Medical Sciences, where she also served as director of child therapy and clinic for early childhood disorders. A five-year unit director of latency service at DePelchin Children’s Center, she also held a private practice in child psychiatry inHouston from 1985 to 1994. Since 1988, Dr. McMillan has continued her role as a consultant for the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. In addition, she has been vice chair of the Restorative Justice Ministry, as well as a board member and treasurer of the Texas Community Corporation since 1995. A certified lay speaker through the United Methodist Church, she has contributed many articles to professional journals and was the author/editor of “Child Psychiatry: Treatment and Research.” Dr. McMillan is a distinguished fellow, mentor and life member of the American Psychiatric Association. She also maintains affiliation with theHouston Psychiatric Society, the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians and the Texas Society of Child Psychiatry. In recognition of her successes, she won a Best Supervisor Award in 2007 and an Excellence Award from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians in 2004. She was also named an OutstandingWoman by the YWCA of Houston in 1978.
