255 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S tumbling into her profession by chance, Sheila Robertson Smith visited a friend in North Carolina and found herself in the employment office of Duke University. Securing a job as a hematology technician at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, she served in the role from 1966 to 1972. From there, Ms. Smith traveled to Maryland, becoming a hematology technician at the North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie from 1972 to 1973. For the following 20 years, she served as a hematology technician at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, until her retirement in 1993. When asked of her career highlights, Ms. Smith recalls working at Anne Arundel Medical Center and receiving a blood slide to analyze. Discovering that the slide was of a newly diagnosed leukemia named hairy cell leukemia, she compared the slide to blood work paperwork of another patient, thus realizing that the slides were similar. She then consulted with the patient’s doctor, who also recognized the similarity and complimented her on her findings. Drawing upon an Associate of Science from Penn Hall College, Ms. Smith maintains affiliation with the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco on their board of directors. Previously, she served Port Tobacco Village & Courthouse as a docent and also sat on the board of directors of the Smallwood Foundation in La Plata, Maryland. Additionally, she was a member of the Charles County Historical Society and the Charles County Garden Club. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Smith has accrued several accolades. The recipient of the Mrs. Frank J. Fletcher Award from the Charles County Garden Club, she also earned the Charles County Historic Trust Preservation Award in 2007. Enjoying needlepoint in her spare time, she has also received myriad Blue Ribbons and Best in Show Awards for her exquisite needlepoint work. She was featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the World andWho’s Who of American Women.
