Earning a diploma from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1962, she commenced her career in 1963 as a critical care, obstetrics and emergency staff nurse at Seaside Hospital, a role she held for 17 years. From there, she was a staff nurse and interim nurse manager in the emergency department of St. Joseph Hospital for the following 15 years. Since that time, Ms. Bither has served in numerous nursing and educational positions, retiring in 2014 after serving as a parish nurse at the East Woods Community Church. Certified in teaching by Humboldt State University since 1984, Ms. Bither is also a registered nurse, certified emergency nurse and certified paramedic instructor. Notably, she has also written regulations for paramedic courses taught in California. The recipient of the Star of Life Award from North Coast Emergency Medical Services, she was named a state officer by the California Jaycees and Nurse of the Year by the Humboldt Nurses Interest Group.
