269 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS D r. John R. Montgomery – a pediatrician and immunologist – is renowned for his co-implementation of the first germ-free environmental bubble in the United States, which was designed for newborns with no natural immune system. Although initially temporary, it was adapted over time by the Texas Children’s Hospital to make the technology permanent with expansion to different rooms. Noted for being the physician of the first patient to be placed in the bubble, David Vetter, he was recognized in Life Magazine and The Decatur Daily. Dr. Montgomery has also conducted research in congenital rubella syndrome and transplant rejection in heart transplant patients. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science and MD from the University of Alabama, Dr. Montgomery served as a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine from 1975, attaining emeritus status in 1997. Previously affiliated with the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, his research and achievements were documented in the movie “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” and the documentary “American Experience.” He has published over 80 academic articles and was highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. William Edward Barry Mayo always wanted to enter medicine since he was a child, having been influenced by his mother, who was a compassionate nurse. Earning an MD from the University of Western Ontario, he was valedictorian of the 1958 graduating class. From there, he completed three residencies at the Latter Day Saints Hospital, the Primary Children’s Hospital and the Henry Ford Hospital between 1958 and 1964. A diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Mayo served as an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery in Royal Oak, Michigan, from 1964 until his retirement in 1996. During his time, he notably served as president of Sportopaedics from 1985 to 1989, as well as a noted member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine. Civically involved as well, he sat on the executive board of the Detroit area council of the Boy Scouts of America in the 1980s, from which he received a Silver Beaver Award.
