327 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D elving into his career path in light of his family’s professional influence, Dr. Benjamin F. Hammond currently serves the Medical College of Pennsylvania as director of the Oral Microbiology Testing Service Laboratory. Previously employed with the college as a professor of medicine for five years, he held similar roles for such other universities as the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University beginning in 1958. At the inception of his career, he served the University of Pennsylvania as a faculty member, having thereafter escalated to the ranks of professor of microbiology, department chairman in the School of Dental Medicine, President’s Lecturer and associate dean of academy affairs. During this time, he was also a research professor in periodontology at Temple University for over a decade. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kansas, DDS from Meharry Medical College and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hammond has further contributed his expertise as a distinguished lecturer at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, and a Ralph Metcalf distinguished visiting professor at Marquette University. Dedicating 18 years to the Brandywine Conservancy as a trustee, Dr. Hammond has additionally authored over 100 articles to esteemed journals within his areas of interest. Dr. Hammond is a member of the Dental Research Council, the American Society for Microbiology and the International Association of Dental Research, and a past president of the American Association of Dental Research, past trustee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and past member of the oral biology and medical study section of the National Institutes of Health. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hammond received the E.H. Hatton Award from the International Association of Dental Research in 1959, citing this as a career highlight. Further, he earned a Research Career Development Award from the U.S. Public Health Service, Lindback Award from the University of Pennsylvania and an award from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School Alumni Association.
