From there, he attended Indiana University and received a Master of Music in 1956 and subsequently returned to the University of Colorado to obtain a Doctor of Musical Arts in 1959. At the inception of his career in 1958, Dr. Boal served as a faculty member at Hastings College for two years before relocating to Bradley University as head of the piano department from 1960 to 1966. Thereafter, he was employed by the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore as a dean and pianist. A past professor of piano and chair of music at the State University of New York at Fredonia, he was also the president of the St. Louis Conservatory, director of KWMU- FM, and vice president and general manager of WETA-FM. From 1982 to 1989, he served as director of arts and performance programs for National Public Radio and concluded his career as president of the Interlochen Center for the Arts in 1995. Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Boal sat on the advisory board of the University of Colorado College of Music from 1987 to 2000 and the board of directors of the Peak Association of the Arts from 1998 to 2000. He was also a trustee of Alma College for three years. Demonstrating versatility, Dr. Boal is a prolific writer and has contributed articles to esteemed journals. He is the noted author of “Interlochen: A Home for the Arts,” published in 1998, which can be found on Amazon. Dr. Boal has maintained affiliation with the College Music Society and Eastern Public Radio Network to remain abreast of developments in his industry. As a testament to his success, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in Professional Music and the George Norlin Award from the University of Colorado. He also held the title of Woodrow Wilson teaching fellow for six years. D r. Dean Boal has been interested in playing the piano since childhood.
