8 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ADVERTISING, MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS J uan Carlos Cappello, an American citizen since 1974, was born in Santiago, Chile, and remains connected to his Latin American cultural background through his experience and knowledge in communications, marketing and international relations. He graduated from the University of Chile with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, and he later came to the United States and received his master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Prior to that, Mr. Cappello was studying law at the University of Chile and became involved in Chilean national politics. He worked as a non-Journalists Guild, associate reporter during his college years, and his talent and educational credentials were recognized by the Inter-American Press Association. Mr. Cappello began his business executive career in 1967. In 1969, he joined ITT Corp. in Chile, later transferring to Spain and Puerto Rico with subsidiaries of that company. He became corporate vice president, director of public information, deputy director, and as of 1984, senior vice president and executive committee member. After retiring from ITT, he formed his company, Contemporanea LLC, a Delaware business and international communications consultancy firm based in New York, where he is chairman and senior partner. With London-based WPP, he created the partnership that made Hill & Knowlton/Latin America one of the most successful public affairs agencies in the region with operations in seven countries. He served as partner, chairman and chief executive officer for a decade. Mr. Cappello is a member of several organizations, such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for International Relations, the Washington Office for Latin America and the North American-Chilean Chamber of Commerce (NACCC), among others. Mr. Cappello has been recognized as the first Latin-American born executive to serve as chief communications officer of any U.S.-based Fortune 500 company. In light of his exceptional undertakings, he earned the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from NACCC and has been decorated by the governments of Austria, Chile and France. Mr. Cappello has many people to thank for their support, including his wife Dr. Jean F. Cappello, a Rutgers and Fordham professor.
