228 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A s far back as he can remember, Dr. Russell D. Evett always wanted to be a doctor and even felt it was a calling. Therefore, when the time came for him to attend college, he knew exactly what he wanted his path to be. Dr. Evett graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, as valedictorian with a Bachelor of Science in 1953. In 1957, he achieved an MD from the Medical College of Virginia followed by his internship at DePaul Hospital. In 1963, he received a Master of Science in medicine from the University of Minnesota after a successful fellowship in internal medicine with the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Evett began his career in 1964 at a private practice of internal medicine in Norfolk, Virginia, and remained there until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Evett was also president of medical staff at Leigh Memorial Hospital from 1970 to 1972 and chairman of the department of internal medicine at Norfolk General Hospital from 1972 to 1974. Additionally, he was a clinical associate professor of medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School from 1974 to 1998. Dr. Evett served as a medical officer during his time with the United States Naval Reserves from 1957 to 1963. He was on active duty from 1958 to 1960 aboard the USS Boxer (LPH4). Although Dr. Evett has spent time at multiple hospitals and practices, he said the highlight of his career was being the president of the Medical Society of Virginia in 1994. He held similar duties as the president of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine in 1976 and as chairman of the Norfolk Community Services Board in 2007. Dr. Evett was awarded the Murray Medal for Scholastics in 1953 on graduation from Randolph-Macon and was given the Laureate Award in 1997 by the Virginia chapter of the American College of Physicians. He views these awards as some of his greatest achievements. Dr. Evett realizes his success would not be possible without the support and motivation of so many mentors. However, he specifically thanks Dr. Hugh Butt from the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Guy Horsely from the Medical College of Virginia, and Dr. Schuyler Miller from his undergraduate years. RUSSELL D.
