251 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G rowing up in a New England town in the early post-World War II period, Dr. William P. Reed was surrounded by community activities, noting that there was little class consciousness and no gated communities. Raised by parents who emphasized the importance of civic and church affairs, he became interested in career paths that allowed him to provide service to others. Deciding to delve into medicine, he subsequently specialized in academic surgery due to his interest in teaching. He attended Harvard University, receiving a BA in 1964, and Harvard Medical School, earning an MD in 1968. Dr. Reed was employed by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he served as an assistant and associate professor of general surgery, director of the tumor registry and director of the surgical intensive care unit. During his tenure, he helped establish their multidisciplinary program for breast cancer patients. Working for 14 years for Tufts University School of Medicine as an associate professor then professor, Dr. Reed also served Baystate Medical Center as the director of surgical oncology and director of the Breast Health Center. For the subsequent 13 years, he served as chair of surgery at Winthrop-University Hospital and was a professor at Stony Brook University from 2001 until attaining emeritus status. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Reed is renowned for developing and evaluating newdevices for vascular access in chemotherapy and dialysis, developing microwave coagulation for hepatic resection and control of hemorrhage from other vascular organs, and describing the early characterization of macrophage-derived tumor necrosis. He received the Golden Apple Award from Baystate Medical Center, the Lifesaver Award from the American Cancer Society, and the Visiting Doctor Award from Ly Tin Province in Vietnam. He was also awarded two Bronze Stars. Dr. Reed’s has volunteered with the Commission on Cancer (COC) of the American College of Surgeons for over 20 years. Appointed to the COC in 1999, he continues to carry out the on-site component of accreditation surveys since 2000. Throughout his career, he has benefited from the support and encouragement of his wife of 56 years, Martine. WILLIAM P.
