126 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A fter taking an interest in the study of bones, Dr. Joyce E. Sirianni knew where she wanted her career to head. She received a BA from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1965, MA from the State University of New York in 1976 and PhD from the University of Washington in 1974. She then obtained an MDiv from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in 1998 and became an ordained Presbyterian minister in 1999. Since 1972, Dr. Sirianni has been a dedicated faculty member at SUNY Buffalo. She has been an assistant professor, associate professor and professor of anthropology, vice provost of graduate education and dean of the graduate school. Since 1992, she has been a distinguished teaching professor of anthropology and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award in 1978. Dr. Sirianni is also a minister at the Faith United Presbyterian Church and a chaplain and consultant for the Town of Amherst Police Department. Additionally, Dr. Sirianni was an instructor of anthropology at Shoreline Community College in Seattle for one year, and was a visiting scientist at the Regional Primate Center at the University of Washington from 1975 to 1979. She was also a research assistant in anthropology at the University of Washington and SUNY. Dr. Sirianni calls her greatest career achievement to be the creation of a course called “Comparative Primate Anatomy,” an undergraduate course that prepares students in the medical and dental fields. A highly technical course, it is also the largest of its kind in the country. The course entails students dissecting monkeys and comparing it with the human cadaver and the cadaver of an ape, chimpanzee or baboon. At the inception of her experiences in forensic anthropology, shortly after she became a graduate student, she worked on the relocation of 17 Native American cemeteries in New York before they got damaged by a man-made dam. Dr. Sirianni is a member of the New York Academy of Science, International Primatological Society, American Association for Anatomy, American Society of Primatology, American Association for Dental Research, American Association of Physical Anthropologists and Sigma Xi.
