She firmly believes teaching is a creative, artistic process. In recent years, Dr. Stevos has been the recipient of various awards for her terrific tenure in education. She was awarded the Charles B. Willard Award from the Rhode Island College Alumni Association in 2019, the Living the Dream Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission in 2019 and the All Kids Award from the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program in 2018. Dr. Stevos is a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, the National Social Studies Supervisors Association, the National Conference for Community and Justice, Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Additionally, Dr. Stevos served as president of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society for 10 years. D r. Joyce Louise Stevos always enjoyed studying history, and during her years at Rhode Island College, she naturally followed the route that took her to teaching. She was surprised to discover how comfortable she felt at the front of the classroom. In 1997, Dr. Stevos received a Master of Education, and in 2005, she obtained a PhD from Rhode Island College. She has been an adjunct faculty member with her alma mater from 1997 to 1999 and again since 2005. In 1971, Dr. Stevos became the head of the social studies department at the Providence School Department and went on to be a teacher and supervisor through 1990. From 1990 to 1992, she was the director of program and staff development for the Providence School Department, and since 1992, she has served as the director of strategic planning and professional development. Dr. Stevos also taught at Salve Regina University from 2003 to 2005. Teaching has been Dr. Stevos’ passion for nearly 50 years, and she calls being a social studies supervisor her career highlight because she has contributed to advancements in the district’s teaching curriculum.
