I n 1972, Dr. Magda Van Hoyweghen began her service as amissionary doctor in Africa, including the countries of Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Malawi and Kenya. Since 1998, she has been a general surgeon with the Medical Mission Sisters Government of Holland and Belgium. She also became involved in the support and care of individuals with AIDS, and in 1963, she became a nun and missionary sister. Dr. Van Hoyweghen received an MD from Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 1966 and then spent the following 14 years completing two residencies in New York City and two fellowships. In 1988, she obtained an MS in bioethics in Antwerp, Belgium, and in 2004, she achieved a master’s degree in bioethics from Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium’s largest French-speaking university. Alongside her achievements, Dr. Van Hoyweghen is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the East African College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the John L. Madden Surgical Society. Of the many years in her profession, Dr. Van Hoyweghen has learned that everyone is human and can bear witness to similar situations despite their life circumstances.
