31 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J on Sheldon Guttman’s interest in historical warfare began from his childhood when he would build models of World War I airplanes and read his father’s old aviation magazines. As his interest progressed, Mr. Guttman had the opportunities to interview actual pilots, and his writing career flourished. He received a BA in history in 1973 and an MA JON SHELDON GUTTMAN MAGAZINE EDITOR, HISTORIAN Historynet.com Leesburg, VA ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT in European history in 1975, both from the State University of New York at Albany. Mr. Guttman served in the New York Army National Guard from 1984 to 1988 and the Virginia Army National Guard from 1988 to 2005, retiring as a master sergeant. Since 1988, he has been a research director, editor and contributing writer for Historynet.com , based out of Vienna, Virginia, where he works on publications such as “Military History,” “MHQ,” “World War II,” “Aviation History,” “America’s Civil War,” “Civil War Times,” “Vietnam” and “Wild West.” Prior to his current roles, Mr. Guttman worked as a National Guard recruiter and an art director for Custombook, Inc., among others. Alongside his work in magazine writing, Mr. Guttman is a renowned author of military history. His first book, “Defiance at Sea,” was published in the United Kingdom in 1995 and has been reprinted twice. He has also written “Grim Reapers,” “The Origin of the Fighter Aircraft,” “Fighter Aircraft Combat Debuts,” “World War II in Color” and “War in the Pacific,” among others. He has also written softback monographs on the “Nieuport 28,” “Caudron G.4,” “American D.H.4,” “Salmson 2A2” and the experimental “James V. Martin K.III Kitten Fighter of World War I.” He has also appeared on The History Channel, ABC, and Comedy Central and in the 2005 film “War of the Worlds.” For his dedication, Mr. Guttman was a four- time recipient of the Thornton D. Hooper Award between 1988 and 2016. He has also received three Army Commendation and Achievement medals, the NATO Medal, New York State Recruiter’s Medal and the Virginia Emergency Service Ribbon. Mr. Guttman is a member of the League of World War I Aviation Historians and the Western Front Association and a former vice president of the Loudoun County Civil War Roundtable.
