105 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION his undergraduate education, serving as a teacher of English composition and literature within Houston Public Schools from 1969 to 1971. In 1971, Dr. Machann entered the graduate program in English at the University of Texas in Austin, where he was offered a teaching assistantship. He received his PhD in 1976. After receiving this degree, Dr. Machann became a professor of English at Texas A&M University. He taught at Texas A&M until his retirement in 2017, when he was named professor emeritus. Throughout his career, Dr. Machann has published a number of scholarly works. He is the author or editor of 11 books, including “Krasna Amerika: A Study of the Texas Czechs, 1851- 1939” (1983), “Matthew Arnold in His Time and Ours” (1988), “Katherine Anne Porter and Texas: An Uneasy Relationship” (1990), “Czech Voices: Stories from Texas in the Amerikan Narodni Kalendar” (1991), “The Essential Matthew Arnold” (1993), “Selected Letters of Matthew Arnold” (1993), “The Genre of Autobiography in Victorian Literature” (1994), “Matthew Arnold: A Literary Life” (1998), “Czech-Americans in Transition” (1999), “Perilous Voyages” (2004) and “Masculinity in Four Victorian Epics” (2010). Additionally, from 2000 to 2012, he edited the international journal “Kosmas: Czechoslovak and Central European Journal.” Professionally, Dr. Machann is a member of the Modern Languages Association, and for 24 years, he served as chairman of the board of directors for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. He was a Fulbright lecturer at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1990, and he has taught summer classes in Czech institutions. He advises aspiring educators to integrate students with their various personal backgrounds and interests into academia.
