106 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Mary Hoyle Mahan always enjoyed movement, whether it was sports, exercise or dance. In 1960, she received a BS in physical education from Bridgewater State University, and in 1963, she achieved an MS in physical education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Mahan later went back to school and obtained an EdD from Nova Southeastern University in 1975. Starting out at the junior high school level, Dr. Mahan commenced her career as a physical education teacher at Stoughton Junior High School in Massachusetts in 1960. From 1963 to 1965, she taught at Locust Valley Junior/Senior High School in New York before moving up to the college level. In 1965, Dr. Mahan became a coach and professor of physical education at Central Connecticut State University and then a professor at Miami Dade College from 1971 to 2001. Settled at Miami Dade College, Dr. Mahan later took on the role of associate athletics director and department chair. In 2005, she was named professor emeritus. Dr. Mahan serves as president of theWoodlands Golf Association, formerly sat on the board of trustees for Cheshire Academy and Bridgewater State, and on the Education Foundation at Villanova University. Additionally, she served as president and chief executive officer for the Teaching Well from 2001 to 2005. Dr. Mahan is also a member of the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletics Administrators, Delta Psi Kappa, Women’s Sports Foundation and College Women Leaders in Sports. For her outstanding leadership and teaching abilities, Dr. Mahan was the recipient of an Outstanding Teacher Award and an endowed teaching chair from Miami Dade College, as well as the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas. She also received an Aquatic Honorary Award from the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Mahan has been named to the Florida Community College Activities Association Hall of Fame, National Alliance of Two Year College Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, Bridgewater State University Athletics Hall of Fame, Weymouth High School Hall of Fame and Florida Colleges Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
