107 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D riven by a passion for the complexities of literature, John Matthias has had a varied career in teaching and writing in both North America and England. Receiving a BA from The Ohio State University in 1963, he subsequently earned an MA from Stanford University in 1966 and completed postgraduate studies as a Fulbright scholar at the University of London in 1967, where his interest in British modernism blossomed. Inhis high school years, he studiedat a summerwriting conference with American poet John Berryman, a pioneer of the school of Confessional poetry. Upon his arrival back to the U.S., Mr. Matthias joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame, where he taught courses in modern literature and then transitioned to teaching creative writing in the MFA program. Ascending the ranks from assistant to associate and full professor beginning in 1967, he attained the title of professor emeritus in 2000. During his academic career, he was co-editor of the Notre Dame Review for 20 years, where he continues as an editor-at-large. In addition to his dedication to Notre Dame, Mr. Matthias became a visiting fellow of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge in 1976, and has been a life member since 1977. Alongside his educational responsibilities, Mr. Matthias has been a decorated poet, author, essayist and playwright. Recently publishing “Acoustic Shadows” in 2019, other notable works to his credit include “Turns” in 1975, “Crossing” in 1979, “A Gathering of Ways” in 1991, three volumes of Collected Poems between 2011 and 2013, and “Complayntes for Doctor Neuro andOther Poems” in 2016. He has been the subject of several scholarly works, including an issue of poetry magazine Samizdat, which was devoted to commentary on his writing. Mr. Matthias’ poetry has also been translated into other languages. As a testament to his literary prowess, Mr. Matthias was granted the Ohio Library Association Poetry Award in 1996. Prior accolades include the George Bogin Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, Slobadan Jovanovic Literary Prize, Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature Poetry Prize and Society of Midland Authors Poetry Award.
