111 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Nancy Jan Moyer always lived and breathed the world of art. When she was an undergraduate student, she was in awe of the lifestyle of the faculty and knew she wanted to go in the profession of art and teaching. Dr. Moyer received her BA at the University of Louisiana NANCY JAN MOYER, PHD PROFESSOR EMERITA OF ART University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley McAllen, TX at Lafayette in 1960, her MA from Louisiana State University in 1963 and her PhD from Southern Illinois University in 1970. Dr. Moyer went on to be the first female department chair at Pan American University (now known as the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley). Dr. Moyer’s career in art and education began at Southwest Texas State University in 1964 as an art instructor. She worked there for two years before spending one year as the head of the art department at St. Francis Academy in Joliet, Illinois. Dr. Moyer arrived at Pan American University in 1969. She was an art professor from 1969 to 1994 and was the Chair of the art department twice: from 1972 to 1980 and 1994 to 2003 after it became the University of Texas-Pan American. Art has been the center of Dr. Moyer’s life from a young age, and her parents were very supportive of her passion. Her artistic and business-like mindset led her to spearheading a successful jewelry exhibition at the International Museum of Art and Science called “Truth and Rumors.” She has had many additional accomplishments, including being an art critic for The Monitor since 2003. Dr. Moyer was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award in 1990 and received the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Citation for Comment and Criticism in 2018. She has also sat on the Professional Guidelines Board for the Society of North American Goldsmiths since 2009 and was on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Art Administrators from 2001 to 2003. Notably, Dr. Moyer’s art has been featured in “Jewelry and Metals Survey,” “Body and Soul: Defensive Ornament” and “Art Jewelry Today 2,” among others. Additionally, Dr. Moyer is the artist behind the public sculpture “Jackrabbit” in McAllen, Texas.
