112 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine in the Governors Teacher Recognition Program in 1986 and named a Vineland Hometown Hero in 2009. She was nominated by her students in 1992, 1996 and 1998 for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Ms. Mulligan was a member of several professional organizations, including the National Education Association, the Cumberland County Education Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English, and was a representative for the Vineland Education Association. She is currently an officer and committee chair for the Delaware Lighthouse Keepers and Friends Association. Ms. Mulligan attributes her success to her mentors Dr. Charles I. Dyer, Ms. Diane Fischer and to her parents. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, playing the piano and organ, and reading. She has written and edited a book highlighting her memoirs from her high school teaching experience. A s a high school senior, Maxine A. Mulligan was selected from a group of five high school seniors for a secretarial position at a newly- constructed junior high school in Vineland, New Jersey. After working in that position for 26 years and building relationships with her principal and colleagues, she decided that she wanted to continue her education and become a teacher. While working as a secretary full time, she attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) part time, earning a BA in 1980 and MA in 1987. After graduating, Ms. Mulligan returned to Vineland High School North as an English teacher, where she served until her retirement in 1998. Alongside her teaching career, she was active in promoting high school sports and held various offices in the Vineland High School All-Sports Booster Club from 1976 to 2017. While holding a secretarial position, she was a member and officer of the Vineland Educational Secretaries Association, negotiating the first contract the association ever had. The format is still being used today. Ms. Mulligan was inducted into the Vineland All-Sports Booster Club Hall of Fame in 2012 and into the Vineland High School Wall of Warriors in 2017.
