113 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Institute for Air Weapons Research from 1954 to 1957, an NSF postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University from 1957 to 1958, and visiting assistant professor at the University of California Berkeley from 1958 to 1959. In 1959, he joined Cornell University and now occupies the Goldwin Smith Chair in Mathematics. In 2019, Cornell recognized him as the longest-serving faculty member in any field in the history of the university. In 1963, as acting director of the Center for Applied Mathematics, Dr. Nerode played a seminal role in founding Cornell’s Computer Science Department. He was chairman of the Mathematics Department from 1982 to 1987, director of the Mathematical Sciences Institute from 1987 to 1997, and director of the Center for Foundations of Intelligent Systems from 1997 to 2002. He co-founded the Kohn-Nerode Partnership and Clearsight Corp. Dr. Nerode has been a visiting professor at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Chicago andMonash University in Australia. For over 20 years, he has been chair of the biennial conference “Logical Foundations of Computer Science,” bringing together world experts in this field. Dr. Nerode’s achievements include the Myhill- Nerode theorem for automata, the theory of isols and recursive equivalence types, development of recursive algebra, and development of control of hybrid systems. He is most proud of his 50- plus PhD graduates in universities, industries and governments. Dr. Nerode has been a member of the IEEE, Association for Computing Machinery, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Association of America and Association for Symbolic Logic. He is an editor of numerous mathematics and computer science journals and books and has chaired many international conferences in logic. D r. Anil Nerode received a BA at age 16 in 1949, and then a BS, MS and PhD in mathematics by 1956, all from the University of Chicago. The University subsequently awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2010 to recognize his lifetime contribution to mathematics and computer science.
