115 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W ith his strong Swedish roots and growing up in Hyde Park, New York, the hometown of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dr. Keith Waldemar Olson discovering his love for history was inevitable. With his mother’s emphasis on education after his father died, Dr. Olson attended the State University of New York at Albany, where he received his BA in 1957 and MA in 1959. He later obtained a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1964 and an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Tampere University in Finland in 2000. Prior to receiving his education, Dr. Olson served with the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Dr. Olson was a member of the history faculty at the University of Maryland from 1966 until 2008, where he was named professor emeritus of history. He had also been a member of the history faculty at Syracuse University from 1963 to 1966. Dr. Olson won three Fulbright appointments to Finland: Tampere, the Oulu and Jyväskylä Universities. In addition to articles and television appearances, Dr. Olson is the author of works including “The G.I. Bill, the Veterans and the Colleges,” “Biography of a Progressive: Franklin K. Lane,” and “Watergate: The Presidential Scandal That Shook America.” Of all of his accomplishments, he is most proud that his book on the G.I. Bill was honored by the Organization of American Historians and recognized as one of the 100 best books in the last century on higher education. His books are available at www.historynewsnetwork.org. Dr. Olson is a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Swedish-American Historical Society, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, the Center for the Study of Presidency and Congress, and the American Scandinavian Association, where he was president from 1998 to 1999. He is also an honorary member of the Finnish Historical Society and served as president of the American- Scandinavian Foundation in Washington from 1977 to 1979.
