121 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D espite facing hardship growing up, Juliana T. Rhoten always found happiness in school. In high school, she was never absent or tardy. In light of this connection to school, she knew she wanted a career in education. Ms. Rhoten received a BA in 1954 and anMS in 1956, both from Hunter College. Later on, she obtained a Specialist in Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1977. Ms. Rhoten became a reading specialist while in New York and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when she got married. From 1956 to 1965, she was a teacher at Milwaukee Elementary Schools, and from 1965 to 1971, she returned to being a reading specialist. In 1974, she became administrator of the radio program at the Sound House, and from 1977 to 1980, she served as assistant principal of the 21st Street School and Clark Street School. For three years, she was principal of Ninth Street School, and from 1983 to 1990, she was principal of the Parkview School. The highlight of Ms. Rhoten’s career was the documentary about the reading program at Milwaukee Public Schools that she helped produce, titled “You Wouldn’t Believe It, But Here It Is.” She brought in visitors from the surrounding states to view the film and then decide on a program. She intended for them to look at the school’s programs to see if they wanted to use the programs in their own districts. She excelled in working on this project from 1971 to 1974. Ms. Rhoten is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, where she was the recipient of the Golden Soror Award. She is also a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Administrators and Supervisors Council, National Council of Teachers of English, National Association of Elementary School Principals, International Literacy Association and Phi Delta Kappa.
