122 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Louis Rowitz received an MA in sociology in 1963 and a PhD in sociology in 1970, both from the University of Illinois Chicago, where he is now known as a professor emeritus. Dr. Rowitz taught at the University of Illinois for 30 years until his retirement in 2012. He has served as a professor of psychiatry and community health sciences, associate dean of the School of Public Health, director of continuing education at the Illinois Occupational Health and Safety Center, and director and teacher of the Center for Public Health Practice. Prior to his years with the university, Dr. Rowitz was a research scientist at the Illinois Institute for Developmental Disabilities from 1969 to 1990 and a behavioral scientist at the Illinois Department of Mental Health from 1965 to 1969. Additionally, he also taught at Rosary College and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Notably, Dr. Rowitz has won numerous awards and recognitions from such organizations as the National Institute of Mental Health, Illinois Department Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, and the Illinois Department Children and Family Services. The highlight of Dr. Rowitz’s career was developing the first federally-funded training program for public health leaders titled the Illinois Public Health Leadership Institute, which lasted 20 years. Dr. Rowitz also enjoyedhis years as an advisor to the Republic of Ireland as they developed a leadership program, and Mr. Rowitz has delivered workshops across Europe. Of all his accomplishments, Dr. Rowitz enjoyed being a college professor. He found great fulfillment in teaching his students, the university atmosphere and being able to further his research. He is also very proud of his writing achievements; particularly, writing the first public health textbook in the country. He attributes his success to his students and the relationships they have built. Despite his retirement, Dr. Rowitz is still an active member of the American PublicHealthAssociation,Midwest Sociological Society, AmericanSociological Association, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Society for Epidemiologic Research, National Council on Family Relations and the Illinois Public Health Association.
