Dr. Mann coined the term “metavision,” and he co-founded the company of the same name. Together with Charles Wyckoff, he invented X-Reality as eXtended Reality in 1991 while at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also founded the MIT Wearable Computing Project as its first member. He is also a founding member of the IEEE Council on Extended Intelligence. Dr. Mann received his doctorate from MIT in 1997, on the topic of humanistic intelligence. He spent much of his childhood reading patents at the local library, and inventing wearable computers and augmented reality devices to see and photograph radio waves, sound waves and neuron action potentials. At the age of 12, he invented the Sequential Wave Imprinting Machine augmented reality system that formed the basis for metavision. Dr. Mann co-founded InteraXon, the makers of the Muse brain-sensing headband, with his students Chris Aimone, James Fung and others. His PhD student, Ryan Janzen, founded a transportation company (Transpod), raised $65,000,000 and won the Innovation of the Year Award. Dr. Mann loves to teach Inventrepreneurship™ and volunteers his time to teach many students using Metamentorship™, a system designed to teach advanced students how to teach beginners. As the first chief scientist of the Creative Destruction Lab and Chair of the Silicon Valley Innovation and Entrepreneurship Foundation, he also provides mentorship to startups. His goal is to invent technology for humanity, and to invent a world of priveillance™, information symmetry in which privacy, surveillance and sousveillance (inverse surveillance) exist in a fair and just equilibrium. D r. W. Steve G. Mann, a full professor at the University of Toronto and full visiting professor at StanfordUniversity, invented the world’s first smartwatch in 1998 and presented it at IEEE ISSCC 2000, where he was named the “Father of Wearable Computing.” He is also the inventor of QSS or Quantigraphic Self-Sensing, later popularized as QS or Quantified Self.
