161 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J oseph May has experienced a flourishing career in the hosiery manufacturing business for four decades. Serving as president of his family’s business, May Hosiery Mills, in Nashville, Tennessee, beginning in 1960, he headed the company for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1983. May Hosiery Mills was founded by Mr. May’s grandfather, Jacob, in the 1890s. Operating for a resounding nine decades, the company produced one million socks per week, distributing their products to the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, among other prestigious organizations. May Hosiery Mills functioned until 1983 when it was sold to another corporation. During his time with his family’s business, Mr. May served as president of many of the company’s subsidiaries. Mr. May graduated from Yale University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts and then served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army from 1947 to 1954 during the peak years of the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Mr. May graduated from New York University in 1958 with a JD. Mr. May also graduated from the Harvard Business School in the late 1960s. Since his retirement from May Hosiery Mills, Mr. May has dedicated his time to the legal industry as a private practice law practitioner in Nashville. He has served on many of the New York Stock Exchange’s corporate boards, including Merrill Lynch Asset Management and many charitable boards. In 2003, Mr. May was a founding director of the Truxton Trust. He is a member of the Tennessee Historical Society, the Rotary Club of Nashville, the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association, the American Arbitration Association, the National Eagle Scout Association and the Yale Club of New York. In his free time, Mr. May enjoys collecting art prints and listening to country music. An essayist and memoirist, he is the author of “Vestigial Organ,” “The Rest,” “An Alphabet of Letters,” “A Confetti of Papers” and “Walking Around the House.” Married to his wife Lynn since 1994, he is the proud patriarch of four children, two step-children and 14 grandchildren.
