167 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine P ossessing an interest in environmental and land development, Ivan P. Vamos received a BA in 1960 and anMS in urban planning in 1965, both from Columbia University. Additionally, he completed postgraduate studies in public affairs at the State University of New York at Albany from 1968 to 1974. Mr. Vamos commenced his career as an engineering geologist with Geotechnics and Resources, Inc., in White Plains, New York, in 1962. He spent 1963 as an engineering geologist in Snowy Mountain, Australia, and in 1965, he returned to New York as an associate transportation planner with the State Department of Public Works. Subsequently, Mr. Vamos spent 1968 to 1974 as the director of planning for New York State Parks and was promoted to assistant commissioner of the environment and then deputy commissioner for planning and development. He worked up until his retirement in 1994. However, from 1994 to 2016, Mr. Vamos took up consulting at Hudson Group LLC, Planning and Engineering Consultants. A member of the American Planning Association, Mr. Vamos spent the early 1960s serving in the military. In 1960, he was a Navy shipboard engineering officer, and in 1961, a naval control of shipping officer in Reykjavik, Iceland. In 1962, he was an officer in charge of site H2 at Radar Station in Iceland. The highlights of Mr. Vamos’ career include helping to protect the United States barrier beaches, specifically the Long Island shorelines, for the Disaster Preparedness Commission. He also established the New York State bicycle coalition 25 years ago, where they helped reorganize the state’s transportation system to recognize bicyclists and pedestrians as modes of transportation. He chaired the New York Metropolitan Transportation Committees until 1993; in that time, they acquired or built a half dozen major state parks. Mr. Vamos is a survivor of the Holocaust, and in order to tell his story of the darkest time in Jewish history, he frequently visits local schools and organizations within 100 miles of Albany. He has spoken to more than 20,000 students since the late 1990s. IVAN P.
