171 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J ames L. Uicker’s father went from engineering professor to dean at the University of Detroit. Inspired by his father’s example, Mr. Uicker made it his goal to also become an engineer. Later on, Mr. Uicker received a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit in 1966 and an MS in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1971. In a 41-year-long career, Mr. Uicker spent 33 of those years as a senior engineer of rotating equipment at Detroit Edison. In this role, Mr. Uicker had influence over the equipment Detroit Edison used in the balancing of their main turbines in at least four power plants. He spent 1971 to 1979 as a fuel and combustion engineer at National Steel’s Great Lakes Division. Mr. Uicker is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Engineering Society of Detroit and the Vibration Institute. In his local community, he has held positions with Knights of Columbus, Addison Township Fire, Bloomfield Hills and the Boy Scouts of America. Additionally, Mr. Uicker was first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. MECHANICAL ENGINEER Detroit Edison Leonard, MI JAMES L. UICKER G erald R. Sobeck received a Bachelor of Science in Analytical Management from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974, and then reached a grade of Lieutenant Commander in the Navy from 1974 to 1983. Following his service, he lived in Silicon Valley, California, where many opportunities were presented to him due to the occupational nature of the environment. Mr. Sobeck has been a Senior Quality Engineer for Sonic Manufacturing in Fremont, California, since 2013 and for Flextronics in Milpitas, California, since 2012. Holding similar roles with Asteel- Flash, Pantronix and Acute Technologies, Mr. Sobeck’s second career was as a professional baseball scout for the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982 to 2002. He also interned for the Boston Red Sox for one year. Notably, in his 20 years as a scout, he has received two World Series rings. Mr. Sobeck attributes his success to the work ethic his mother instilled in him, as she was a widow with three sons who worked until the age of 66.
