233 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine M any medical specialties may be unknown to a young medical student, and such was the case for Dr. Paul Y. Liu. He had the life-changing opportunity to see a child with severe facial abnormalities be completely healed by plastic surgeons at Boston Children’s Hospital. From that moment on, Dr. Liu decided he wanted to contribute to healing others via plastic surgery. Dr. Liu graduated from Colorado College in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts, the University of Oxford in 1983 with a Master of Arts, and Harvard Medical School in 1987 with an MD. Dr. Liu jump started his career in 1996 as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In 1998, he headed northward to serve as an assistant professor of surgery at the Tufts University School of Medicine and senior staff surgeon at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. From 2002 to 2007, Dr. Liu worked at the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island, as director and chairman of surgery. From 2006 to 2012, Dr. Liu was an associate professor of surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Liu is currently a professor of surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, chairman of the department of plastic surgery at Lifespan Hospitals, and founder and chief executive officer of PAX Therapeutics. Research has been a large part of Dr. Liu’s career, and some of his best research includes that of gene therapy with the Wound Healing Society. He has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the Founder’s Award from the New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in 2013 and the Dean’s Award for Teaching from the Warren Alpert Medical School in 2016. Dr. Liu is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Ezekiel Hersey Society, the Aesculapian Club of Harvard Medical School and the University Club of Providence. Dr. Liu attributes his success to his mother, as well as plastic surgeons Dr. John Mulliken and Dr. Elof Eriksson. PAUL Y.
