235 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Eric R. Marcus received a BA from Columbia University in 1965 and an MD from the University of Wisconsin in 1969. He completed an internship at New York University’s Bellevue Hospital Center in 1970 and a residency at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center’s New York State Psychiatric Institute in 1975. Additionally, Dr. Marcus was a division psychiatrist with the 42 nd Infantry of the New York Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976. Dr. Marcus has been a supervisor training analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training andResearch since 1994, having previously been a director for a decade. He is also a professor of clinical psychiatry at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where for 27 years, he was director of medical student education for the department of psychiatry. During that time, he studied the stages of development of medical students’ empathic capacity by looking at their dreams about medical school and residency training. This study guided curriculum reform and the study applied psychodynamic techniques to social science research. Dr. Marcus’ research focuses on modern ego psychology. He is especially interested in symbolic alterations of reality, such as their phenomenology, psychic structure, uses and neurophysiology. He has studied their manifestations in psychosis, culture, art and creativity. His deepest professional satisfaction has come from patient care in the private practice of adult general psychiatry and psychoanalysis. For his cutting edge research, Dr. Marcus was the recipient of the Sabshin Award fromthe American Psychoanalytic Association in 2003. Hewas awarded the Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1999 and theO’Connor Teaching Award in 1995. In 1991, Dr. Marcuswas also granted the Roeske Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Weber Research Award fromColumbia’s Psychoanalytic Center. Dr. Marcus is a member and former president of the New York District County American Psychoanalytic Association and president and fellow of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine.
