237 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. D. Robert McCaffree was attracted to the idea of being a physician from a young age, knowing he would be able to help many people. His parents owned a drugstore in their hometown of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and he admired how so many people came to his parents for medicine to make them feel better. That is the career path young Dr. McCaffree set out for himself. Dr. McCaffree graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Oklahoma State University in 1965 and received an MD from the University of Oklahoma in 1969. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Oklahoma, a second residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland and a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. McCaffree’s clinical interests include critical care medicine, acute lung injury, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and tobacco cessation. Dr. McCaffree taught medicine at the University of Oklahoma between 1977 and 2019, in which he rose from assistant professor to associate professor and, finally, full professor. In 2009, he was named Regents Professor of Medicine. Additionally, Mr. McCaffree has been an attending physician at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center since 1977, and from 1985 to 1990, he was chief of staff at Oklahoma Memorial Hospital and of the VA Hospital from 1991 to 2009. Out of all of his positions, Dr. McCaffree said he most enjoyed seeing patients and teaching his students, residents and fellows. Dr. McCaffree was named to Leadership of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. He is a past president and master fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American Lung Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Physicians. Dr. McCaffree attributes his success to his mentors Dr. Clarence Guenter, Dr. Robert M. Rogers and Dr. James Hammarsten, who initially got him oriented toward pulmonary disease. D.
